VHS dominated about 60% of the North American market from the 80s through the early 2000s. Around the same time folks were flocking to their local Blockbusters to rent the latest movie releases on VHS, home moviemaking enjoyed a revival. The problem was VHS camcorders were far too unwieldy and the market was ripe for a more portable device. Enter the diminutive MiniDV, a sleeker and smaller recording technology that enabled taking videos on the go. Of course, the saying what comes around goes around applies to technology. In the mid-1990s DVDs were introduced and although this format didn’t become a household name until 2003, VHS and MiniDVs declined in popularity.
