Gerald G. Boyce Signed 1999 “Verdi” Casein Painting
A casein painting by the American artist Gerald G. Boyce (1925-1999). Titled Verdi, this abstract work depicts a portrait of the Italian composter Giuseppe Verdi amidst stacked rectangles in orange, yellow, black, and purple. Signed to the lower left and titled verso, the painting is displayed in a metal frame and a pale green and white double mat. Born in Embarrass, Wisconsin, Boyce graduated with an undergraduate Science degree from Wisconsin State University in 1949 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1950. He later completed postgraduate degrees from Indiana University, the University of Illinois, Oxford University, and the Americano Guatemalteco Instituto in Guatemala. Boyce had an extensive teaching career, mostly as the chair of the Art Department, as well as an art history professor, at the University of Indianapolis.
