Walter Sorge Signed “Atelier” Aquatint Print
An aquatint print by the Canadian artist Walter Sorge (1931-2021). Titled Atelier, this broody abstract work depicts organic and biomorphic shapes floating against a shadowy background. Signed to the lower right, the print is numbered 9/30 to the lower center and titled to the lower left. The print is displayed in a black frame and a white mat. Born in Alberta, Canada, Walter Felix Sorge attended UCLA and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from there during the 1950s. He continued his education at Columbia University in New York where he received his Doctorate in Fine Art and Fine Art Education. Sorge also studied under Stanley William Hayter in Paris and worked at Atelier 17. He later had an extensive career as an art educator and served as head of the art department at Kentucky Southern College in Louisville, the head of the art department at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, as well as chairman of the art department at Eastern Illinois University.
