Chikarkarpe Style Antique Indigo Ainu Robe

Ainu - Native Japanese robe composed of indigo dyed cotton with traditional motif appliqued the created in stitched cotton thread.    This is an unusual robe.   Rather than applique, the dark blue and red pattern was resisted and dyed like tsutsugaki and then outlined with embroidery.   The coat shows evidence of being worn but may have been part of the Ainu style trend that was popular in the 1920s.  Indigo Cotton Cotton Direct Dye and embroidery  Early 20th Century 46" x 47" (length, width)
