Carved Ranma | Japanese Transom Screen | Sugi (Japanese Cedar) | Japanese Architectural Decor
Ranma (transom area decoration) are placed above doorways to allow light and air to pass between interior rooms when doors are closed. The motif, shōchikubai, consists of a plum tree, bamboo, and a pine tree. Bamboo and pine trees remain green throughout the winter, while plum trees flower in February, before most other flowering plants in Japan. When pictured together, these three plants make the 'Three Friends of Winter'.
