Ranma (transom area decoration) are placed above doorways to allow light and air to pass between interior rooms when doors are closed.    The motif, shōchikubai, consists of a plum tree, bamboo, and a pine tree. Bamboo and pine trees remain green throughout the winter, while plum trees flower in February, before most other flowering plants in Japan.
