Hagoromo Shobo Hanten | Antique Japanese Reversible Sashiko Fireman's Coat
Reversible firefighter's hanten 半纏 (heavier weight coat made popular in the 18th century) with sashiko 刺し子 (traditional hand stitching or quilting used as reinforcement and decoration) throughout. The coat is made from multiple layers of cotton held together with upwards of 100 stitches per square inch. The interior features tsutsugaki 筒描 (resist dying process) of a scene from the myth of Hagoromo (feather mantle). A goddess from the moon takes off her feather cape to bathe at the water's edge and the cape is found by a fisherman. After some negotiation, he returns the cape to her so she can fly back to heaven.
