Large sakiori kotatsu rug created from various cotton panels patched and reinforced with sashiko stitching.   The hole in the middle was for a sunken floor hearth allowing people to sit around the heat from the hearth on the rug.  Boro is a Japanese form of recycling coming from an economic necessity in which fabric is patched on the reverse side to preserve the usability.  The beauty comes from the unintentional artistry created from layers of mending.  Wear consistent with age and use.  Cotton & Silk Sakiori  Patchwork back  Early 20th century 71" x 71 " (length, width) SKU: FT-3281
