Corylus avellana is a large dispersal shrub, bush or small tree belonging to Betulaceae family. The name Hazel is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word for bonnet, Haesel. It is also called filbert or cobnut. The shrubs basically can spread up to 10-15 ft. Trees start to bear fruit when they are 3-4 years old, and their life span is up to 40 year. Trees normally produce 12 kg of dried nuts each. Leaves are 2-3 inch in length, roughly ovate, acuminate, and vaguely lobed with doubly indent margins. It is native to Europe and Asia Minor due to the moist winters and cool summers. Oil The hazel nut oil is extracted from its nut which is oval and oblong in shape.
