Love Token

Jewelry of all kinds from fine to sentimental, has been worn to communicate symbolic personal meaning throughout history.  Victorian Love Token Jewelry, popular in the 18th century and later outlawed, was created by smoothing one side of a coin such as a copper penny or a silver dollar and adding custom engraving with a stylistic monogram or initial. The story of the Love Token tradition that really appealed to me was that they weren’t just gifted to convey affection, they were small objects of art meant to communicate a feeling or express a sense of identity.  I wanted to revive this quiet, powerful ritual through my own medium, clay.
