Number Sense Fun with Names and Numbers

This Mini-Book will help your students practice a variety of math skills that encompass reading and spelling as well. The students will use the names of students in the class OR use their weekly vocabulary/high frequency/ or spelling words to complete the different math skills in the mini-book. The students will: count the vowels and consonants in the Names or Words count the TOTAL number of letters in the Names or Words figure out if the numbers are Odd and Even create a number bond to represent the part, part, whole relationship draw tally marks to represent the number create a fact family to represent the number represent the number in a tens frame Included in this kit is: Full Color and Black and White Mini-Book Cover Recording Sheet for Names of Students Recording Sheet for Words they choose (vocabulary, high frequency, spelling words, etc.) This Mini-Book can be used in a variety of ways:  My FAVORITE way to utilize this activity is during those “WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW” times of the day. I have about 5 or 6 quick workers that are always done with their work way before the rest of the class. This is a perfect LONG-TERM activity where students can use their spelling words, high-frequency words, or weekly vocabulary words to work on in this mini-book. This can be used for a month’s worth of words and keep those “early finishers” working when the other students are still finishing their work! This activity can be used by making a class book. Each child can complete their own page in the book using their own first name and last name and it can be placed in the class library for the students to read. This activity can also be used in a Language Arts or Math Center. All you have to add to the center is a class list and recording sheets for the students to complete. They can use the class list to add the names to their recording sheet to complete the activity. If you use the product in this way, I would suggest copying the pages on a regular-sized paper and not in a mini-book. It can be used as a “Scoot” game. The students can use their name tags that are on their desks or create a name tag on a sentence strip or construction paper. The students “scoot” around the room going from desk to desk and use their friends names to complete the fact family, number bond, and tens frames using the consonants and vowels in each name they write down in their mini-book. Just photocopy enough pages in a back-to-back format and run it through the copy machine. Fold the mini-book in half and you have a GREAT math activity that encompasses literacy, spelling, number sense and movement.
