Costa Rica, a country in Central America, enjoys the reputation of having high quality Arabica coffee. This country was first explored by Columbus in 1502 and was named Costa Rica (Rich Coast). First planted in the 19th century, coffee became Costa Rica's first major export. It is cultivated in the middle of the country in mountainous regions with elevations ranging from 3000 to over 5000 ft. Coffee is grown in volcanic red soil, on mountain slopes with morning sun and afternoon cloud cover, which provides an ideal rich environment that results in a superior coffee. The coffee is harvested from October thru mid March during the dry season. The coffee is then wet processed which contributes to the sweet, full bodied coffee with hearty richness and lively acidity.
