Bred for the bonsai market, this compact, low-growing, evergreen shrub makes a rounded form in the garden. The foliage is medium to smaller than most and attractive when out of bloom. The deep reddish-orange flowers come out in May and into June, covering the plant fully. Being a Kurume hybrid azalea, it can take more sunlight than other types, although in hot areas some protection is advisable. Because of its lower height, 'Hino-tsukasa' is a good choice for the smaller garden. Prune just after flowering to maintain a dense and compact habit.
