The nine-banded armadillo is a small, armored mammal native to the Americas, particularly abundant in the southern United States and Central America. It is named for the bands of flexible armor on its shell, which allow it to curl partially for protection. Known for its digging skills, this nocturnal creature forages for insects, grubs, and other small invertebrates using its sharp claws and keen sense of smell. The nine-banded armadillo is also famous for its unique ability to give birth to identical quadruplets from a single fertilized egg.
