Several pirates used the skull and crossbone flag or variations of the symbols. A possible origin is from the Welsh pirate Bartholomew Roberts or Black Bart, who flew the skull and crossbones. Also Edward England, a pirate operating in the Carribean, was one of the first known pirates to fly the Jolly Roger between 1718 and 1720. Calico Jack, was an English pirate captain operating in the Bahamas and in Cuba during the early 18th century. He popularized the Jolly Roger flag as we think of it today. Although Calico Jack actually used the skull and cross swords as his Jolly Roger flag, many associate the skull and crossbones as the Calico Jack Jolly Roger. Calico Jack's Jolly Roger Embroidered Flag Patch, 2" x 3" embroidered patch can be stitched to almost any other product.
