The Curtiss P40 warplane become well known during the defense of China during the Japanese Invasion from 1941 to 1942. Composed of pilots from the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC), Navy (USN), and Marine Corps (USMC), this was an all volunteer assignment commanded by Claire Lee Chennault. Their Curtis P-40B Warhawk aircraft, marked with Chinese colors, flew under American control. The name "Flying Tigers" became part of pop culture as a result of films and books highlghting the conflict and the American success surrounding the mission.
