The ancient Greeks and Romans already knew valerian as a medicinal plant. But its real success story only began around 200 years ago, when the English doctor John Hill promoted it as a sedative and introduced it into medicine in the 18th century. The active ingredients are extracted exclusively from the rhizome of the European valerian (Valeriana officinalis), which is now cultivated in its own cultures. After cleaning and careful drying, the roots develop the characteristic valerian smell. In a complex process, a dry extract is made from the cut root mass, which contains the active ingredients in concentrated form. To date, science has not succeeded in fully explaining the effect of valerian. It seems that therapeutic success is only possible through the mutual interaction of many different ingredients. There is therefore still a secret behind this well-known and widely used remedy.
