Introduction to Drawing and Painting
Date: July 19 - 22 Time: 8:30 am-12:30 pm (Monday-Thursday) Cost: $220 for the week Students will learn basic drawing and painting skills, supplemented by a review of art practices by a handful of great artists throughout history. Most of the class time will be spent in guided drawing and painting practice. Each class will begin with a look at artist(s) works to spark a discussion on such questions as: what is art? what different types of art are out there? what does it mean to draw from life versus from the imagination? what is a sketch and what is a finished piece? and how do artists work? The discussion will be followed by short demonstrated lessons and practice time. Lessons will cover: Drawing: o Pencil weight, shading o Perspective o Finding large shapes (simplification) o Using your pencil as a sighting tool Painting (watercolor and opaque gouache):o Color mixing o Noticing the darkest and lightest parts of the scene (value) o Creating watercolor washe
