The machining process allows the rib surface to offer varying grip under different belt loads. Under minimal boost (light Throttle) the belt tension is lower at the pulley face. The process offers a low load area for the belt to have normal factory like contact on the rib face allowing the belt to wear less over time. When load is applied it is wedged down into the Convex knurling the grip becomes more aggressive to the belt the higher the load (Boost demand) becomes.  This keeps the belt on a perfect grip/wear threshold.
