November 10, 1775 the Continental Congress passes a resolution for "two Battalions of Marines to be raised" for the Navy. The first Marine landing was made by Captain Samuel Nicholas in March 1776 on hostile territory, an island in the Bahamas, New Providence Island was captured. After the war was over the Marines were disbanded. After bringing back the Navy in 1798 2 months later the Marines were back as a permanent force under the Navy. In 1776 the emblem for the Marines like the Navy was the "Fouled Anchor". It change a few times, giving it the Western Hemisphere and a different eagle, but in 1954 President Eisenhower approved a design for an official seal for the United States Marines Corps.
