The Elephant became the Republican Party's Mascot due to Thomas Nast was a political cartoonist for Harper's Weekly and the New York Herald. He also was a Republican. and used the Elephant several times in his work. He was upset at the Democratic Party and used the Donkey in a Lion suit to scare animals at the Zoo. One of those animals was the Elephant which had the name "Republican Vote" on it. When the House of Representatives was lost to the Republicans he put an Elephant in the way of the Donkey.
