Precision and spontaneity are at odds in the work of Huang Li Chia’s ceramic work, thrown from a gravity defying stoneware clay. From her studio in South Eastern Taiwan, shared with her woodworking partner, the artist considers functionality, expression, and beauty as she creates pieces pared back to reveal each element at its most foundational, in an incredibly successful line of teaware. Tea caddies feature very sparsely in our collection, yet we couldn’t resist the character and charm of Chia’s petite jars; a most delightful accompaniment to the artist’s collection of teapots, servers, and water bowls. The exterior of each vessel is brushed in a tactile layer of engobe, the clay-rich slurry that lends the piece it’s meringue-like texture. Inside, the vessel features a light layer of glaze that pulls freckles of iron spotting to the surface of the clay like beauty marks. Pictured is one in a series of 6 similar pieces. Slight variations are possible from piece to piece, a hallmark
