Phaseolus vulgaris HEIRLOOM. A large cornfield-type pole bean with large, round, white seeds. Fatman is a very heavy producer of tender and flavorful 5” pods on 6-7’ vines. There is a lot of documentation of this bean being grown for 100+ years in both Virginia and West Virginia where it remains popular to this day. The information is conflicting about which state it first originated in though. Extremely productive and is delicious as a snap bean, dried as a soup bean, and strung up for leather britches too. Very rare. Direct seed into the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Pole beans will need full sun and well-draining soil. Provide a trellis for these beans. Water well to ensure good germination. Once germinated, pole beans will need at least an inch of water per week. Consistently harvesting the pods will result in a long harvest window. Annual. SMALL FARM GROWN by Peacemeal Farm in Virginia.
