Phormictopus sp. 'Dominican Purple' is an extraordinarily metallic purple-colored member of the subfamily Theraphosinae. This spider reaches a massive 7-8.5" diagonal leg span and is unbelievably beautiful. Mature males and females develop incredibly vibrant metallic purple to violet coloration throughout their bodies and legs.             This tarantula is native to semitropical rocky habitats of the Dominican Republic—the natural history of Phormictopus sp. 'Dominican Purple' is not well documented. However, this undescribed species is likely similar in biology and ecology to P. cancerides.
