The Cobalt Red Rump Tarantula, Thrixopelma cyaneolum Schmidt, is a gorgeous, colorful, and docile dwarf New World tarantula of the subfamily Theraphosinae. Adults mature at 4-5" diagonal leg span and develop a jaw-dropping inky black coloration with royal blue sheen on their carapace, chelicerae, and femurs. If that were not enough, the abdomen is jet black with electrified rusty red setae. The legs have zebra-like yellow stripes on the patella through metatarsi and are lined in sharply contrasting orange-to-yellowish bristles.             T. cyaneolum is native to the highlands of Peru. This species is a slow grower– a trait typical of mygalomorphs residing in cooler climates. T. cyaneolum is suitable for beginners, as they are generally docile. However, these tarantulas can be skittish and raise their abdomen when spooked.
