Second Grade Subitizing Cards

Subitizing Cards to accompany each fact in second grade!  What is Subitizing?  Subitizing is the ability to instantly recognize a number of objects without counting them. Students use pattern recognition to discover the essential properties of numbers and how they work together.  How are the subitizing cards used? You show the students the card and then ask them to tell you what math they see. They may see multiple things from one card.  For example: From the card above students might see. 1 less than 10 is 9. 9 take away 2 is 7. 7 plus 2 more is nine. 5 and two more is seven. And many more. Why is this beneficial? In a group setting students learn that others students might be making different connections than they do and this is a great thing.  Subtilizing also helps students to visually manipulate groupings of objects or number in their head.
