Colombia / Finca Monteblanco – Reserve Series

Our grand finale in our trio of coffees from Rodrigo Sánchez is one of our staff’s all-time favorites—the cold-washed processed Monteblanco Pink Bourbon. Rodrigo is a third-generation coffee farmer and continues to work on the farms that his grandfather first planted in the 1980s. After learning to run a farm successfully from his grandfather and father, Rodrigo turned his focus to the flavor that was being created in the coffees they were growing. So, Rodrigo started to investigate the varieties of trees that his grandfather had planted. He took note of one plant in particular, whose cherries turned a pinkish-orange when ripe. He found that their taste was exquisite—juicy, complex, floral. The variety he found was Pink Bourbon. Pink Bourbon was initially thought to be a natural mutation of the much more common variety Bourbon. However, further genetic research revealed it to be a landrace variety, hailing from Ethiopia, which helps to explain the remarkable cup quality. Rodrigo’s Mont
