Sanguine, from the Latin sanguis for 'blood,' is one of the most significant colors in art history. The reddish-brown color of clay-rich earth has always been used by artists as a basic drawing color, and it is especially important in figure drawing. These sanguine leads, designed to fit any 5.6 mm lead holder, have an oil-based formula for smooth application and less dust than chalk pastels. They sharpen smoothly with a standard pencil sharpener and can be partially erased (with some ghosting) with a gum eraser. A lidded plastic box is included for safe storage and transport.
