She was commissioned on August 5th, 1939. At the end of November of the same year the Belfast was released from service for three years as a result of damage by a German mine. After 1942, she accompanied Arctic convoys. On December 26th, 1943, she and the cruisers HMS Norfolk and HMS Sheffield repelled the attacks of the German battleship Scharnhorst, who attempted to make her way into an Allied convoy.
