A pair of the giant marine turtle Archelon mate near the surface of a sea that cut through the American Great Plains during the Late Cretaceous. The long ridges and leathery shell of Archelon resemble living leatherback turtles, but they were actually part of a completely extinct lineage of turtles, the protostegids.Illustration by Anthony Hutchings
