The Story Behind this Painting The peony is believed to be named after Paeon, the Greek physician of the gods. According to the legend, Paeon was a student of Aesculapius, the god of medicine. When Paeon used a peony root to heal Pluto — the first time this was tried — Aesculapius became jealous of Paeon's talents and tried to kill him. To save Paeon (and show compassion to him), Pluto transformed him into a peony, because he knew it was a flower that people would admire and praise. Thus, one peony meaning is compassion. Florence's garden of peonies often became her inspiration for watercolor paintings.  She completed the original 15" x 17.5" watercolor, Pink on Pink Peonies, in 1997.  Add pink passion and compassion to your life with this basket of pink peonies. Hang Pink on Pink Peonies and its sister painting, Pink Peony Splash, in your living room, dining room, or bedroom for full immersion into Florence's gardens. This high-quality giclée print comes rolled and ready for matting
