This coffee comes to us from the Kamwangi Factory in northeast Kirinyaga. It is one of three factories owned and managed by the New Ngariama Farmers Cooperative Society. The Kamwangi Factory has roughly 985 active members who all own very small plots (1/8 to 1/4 hectare) that house between 200 and 250 trees. Like many Kenyan lots, this lot contains a blend of SL28, SL34, and Ruiru 11 varietals. This lot also sees the inclusion of Batian, the newest variety developed in Kenya. It was developed to be higher yielding and more disease resistant, and is known for its tart, berry-forward notes.This lot from Kamwangi is the second Kenyan release of the season for us. It is, in many ways, a classic representation of Kenyan coffee. It leads with distinctly tart notes of cranberry and lemon, but is backed up by considerable sweetness on the finish that reads like molasses.
