Ginseng or "human root" has been used for medicinal purposes for at least 5000 years, and the earliest written book reference from China in 196 AD (Shen Nong's Pharmacopoeia) mentions its medicinal use. The Latin prefix panax is derived from the Greek panacea, or cure-all. The plant is native to the Korean peninsula, Northern China, and Eastern Russia.
