Cloves are the dried flower buds of an evergreen tree native to Indonesia that have spread to India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and more. These single origin cloves come from a collective of farmers working in the Kandyan Forest Gardens in Sri Lanka. Cloves has a hot and pungent flavor and can be used in both sweet and savory dishes. You’ll find cloves in pumpkin spice blends, garam masala, berbere, jerk seasoning, Chinese 5 spice, among other blends. Taste it in apple pie, mulled wine, seafood dishes, and spiced pork loin. Clove pairs well with cardamom, black pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, cassia and bay leaves. Chew on a clove as a breath freshener. Steep with your favorite black tea. Add to your pot of rice as it cooks. Make an onion pique where you use cloves to pin bay leaves to an onion for broths or consommés. Cloves can be used in so many ways, the possibilities are endless.
