Dipper Gourds grow up to 2' long and 5" around at the "dipper" or bulbous portion of the gourd. Once dried and cut to shape, they have many practical uses. Interesting Shape - Dipper gourds grow with a long skinny neck ending in a round shape that can be used as a ladle when cut and dried early. For straighter "handles" train the plant to grow up a trellis. Necks will naturally curve if left to grow on the ground. Birdhouses - Dipper gourds can be adapted to make beautiful birdhouses for purple martins and other cavity nesting birds. The long handle makes these birdhouses visually interesting and appealing Scarify for Better Germination - This type of seed should be soaked and/or scarified prior to planting for improved germination. Scarification means nicking, scratching, sanding, or otherwise damaging the exterior coating of the seed. This can be done with a nail file or sandpaper. Follow instructions on packet
