Long ago, the gods and demons gathered to churn the great Ocean of Milk, seeking the nectar of immortality. From the depths of the cosmic waters arose treasures beyond imagining—celestial jewels, sacred herbs, radiant blossoms, and at last, the goddess Lakṣmī herself, embodiment of beauty and abundance. Yet with these blessings came a deadly poison, fierce enough to destroy creation. To protect all beings, Lord Shiva drank the poison, holding it in his throat, which turned a brilliant blue. From that moment, he was known as Nīlakaṇṭha—the Blue-Throated One, guardian who absorbs the world's toxic negativity and maintains cosmic balance, embodying both destruction and preservation.
