Program-libretto for the world premiere performance at La Scala, Milan of the Carlos Gomes opera Il Guarany, based on the novel O Guarani by Jose de Alencar, the first Brazilian opera to gain acclaim outside of Brazil. First performed in March, 1870, with a celebrated cast including the legendary French baritone Victor Maurel in the role of Il Cacico, the chief of the Aymoré Indians.
