Vernal Pool Expedition

Spring brings one of the most magical and fleeting ecosystems in the forest- the vernal pool! These temporary woodland ponds appear with the melting snow and spring rains, creating a hidden world filled with amphibians, insects, and other fascinating creatures. During this immersive outdoor experience, young naturalists and their families will join us for a guided exploration of a local vernal pool (at the Jim Hill Riverwalk). Our adventure begins with a story walk along the forest trail, where we will learn how these special seasonal wetlands form and why they are so important for wildlife. Once we reach the pools, we will slow down and begin our investigation. Together we will talk about what signs of life to look for, observe the creatures that depend on these habitats, and conduct a simple vernal pool survey just like real field scientists.
