Native shrub has colorful and abundant fruit and works well for property borders and screens. Grows wild in acidic soils in forested wetlands or along ponds, lakes and marshes. Winterberry is a food source for some wildlife, but can be poisonous to pets and people. Is a crucial host plant for a butterfly of special concern in Wisconsin. Easy to grow with few diseases and pests. Grows slowly and may spread by suckering.  Plant in multiples for pollination. Deer resistant.  If site is prepped well, can be used in reforestation of a harvested black ash forest
