Delicate materials and hand craftsmanship give the iconic Asian lantern a contemporary twist with the Formakami collection by Jaime Hayon.  Formakami is a hybrid concept fusing different aspects of cultures into a new design idiom. Airy, bulbous shapes crafted in traditional ivory white rice paper with black lacquered ash accent bands blend Asian and Scandinavian design elements. Placed in a modern milieu and cultural references disappear - replaced by a sense of magic. Switched off, there’s a sense of serenity in the sculpture. Switched on, there’s intimacy. “Lamps play such an important role in people’s lives,” explains Hayon. “For some cultures, they chase away the darkness by bringing hope. I’ve tried to keep this emotional angle about light – in a lamp that also appears light.
