Thomas Gamaliel Bradford (1802-1887) was born in Boston, Massachusetts, where he worked as an assistant editor for the America Encyclopedia before entering the field of atlas publishing. Bradford focused his atlases on the United States and dispensed with the ornamental decoration common in European atlases in favor of a more informational approach, perhaps inspired by the efforts of the S.D.U.K. Bradford's first major cartographic work was his revision and subsequent republication of an important French geography by Adrian Balbi, published in America as Atlas Designed to Illustrate the Abridgement of Universal Geography
