Large 14" Antique French Napoleon III era Mourning Hair Art, Father Memorial Dated 1869
Substantial 19th century French Napoleon III era mourning hair artwork. Entirely crafted from hair as a lasting memento of a lost loved one. Sentimental miniatures, like sentimental jewelry, reached a height of popularity in the late Georgian era / Napoleonic era. The superb artistry is evident in the careful placement of finely arranged hair atop a painted 'sky' background. Unusual to find a mourning piece with an image of the father. Represented here with a sepia photograph, standing beside the tomb with a wreath in hand. The large tomb with an epitaph of "Souvenir d'un Père", in memory of father, monogrammed J.B.D. and dated July 6th 1869.
