“Khampa Airlift to Tibet” November 1959, by Dru Blair“Khampa Airlift to Tibet” depicts a C-130B operated by an aircrew from Civil Air Transport—a CIA Air Proprietary—dropped 16 Khampa guerrillas and 10,000 pounds of arms and equipment. Two smokejumpers from Missoula, Montana served as jumpmasters. Heavy duty protective jumpsuits and steerable parachutes—patterned after early smokejumper designs—enabled the guerrillas to land on an unmarked drop zone at 14,000 ft. elevation, 150 miles northeast of Lhasa without injury. The Tibetans’ mission was to organize resistance against the invading Chinese forces.
