Born Cassius Clay, January 17, 1942, Clay was first directed toward boxing by Louisville police officer and boxing coach Joe E. Martin, who encountered the 12-year-old fuming over thieves taking his bicycle. He told the officer he was going to "whup" the thieves when he found them. The officer told Clay he had better learn how to box first.  He began training as a boxer at the age of 12.  At age 18 he won the gold medal for the United States, at the 1960 Summer Olympics.  In 1964, at the age of 22, he went pro and won the WBA, WBC, and Lineal Heavyweight titles from Sonny Liston in a huge upset.   Ali is regarded as one of the leading heavyweight boxers
