He was born in Jizernim and later became a teacher. There he played chess with colleagues and after seeing some problem compositions in one of the local Czech chess magazines, he constructed some and one was published. In 1897 he received first prize in the tournament, "Kurijer Warszawski" (20 rubles) and the same year had several compositions published in Berliner Schachzeitung.
