The Torneio Sulamericano was replaced in 1951 by the Torneio Zonal Sulamericano, except for 1962 when the Torneo Latino-americano was played. The tournament was also the zonal for South America with players from the following countries Argentina - Brasil - Chile - Peru - Uruguay. The event took place in the salon of the Gran Hotel Provincial in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The hotel is one of a pair of twin buildings designed by architect Alejandro Bustillo
