Obv: A figure of Hope standing, holding a book, SOUTH SHIELDS HALFPENNY. 1794. (around). Rev: A ship sailing, SUCCESS TO THE COAL TRADE around. Edge: PAYABLE AT THE SOUTH SHIELDS AND LONDON . X X .  Uncirculated and Prooflike. Usual die flaw on the obverse extending from the 7 in date. Underlying red.   Another product of Wyon and Kempson. South Shield is a seaport at the mouth of the river Tyne and was once known for its coal trade as seen by the inscription on the reverse. Issuer unknown.
