Chinese betrothal basket with cover (1880-1910)
Painstaking hand woven, dyed, and detailed Chinese bamboo betrothal basket with cover. The basket shape is round bowl form on an integrated base, and the thick bamboo rim is fitted with a lid decorated with a layered weaving in the tortoise shell pattern over another intricate weave. This multi-layered weaving technique, with embroidered medallion and free-floating copper coins woven into the base of the basket, was a style of basketry produced by of one of China’s minority communities in Southwest China. This is a unique traditional design of the highest quality and condition. China, 1880-1910. Condition: Exceptionally fine quality and condition. There is a single small loss at the bottom of the basket and some marks to the underside of the lid. Wear commensurate with age and use.
