Original engraving of Francis William Grant (1778-1853), of Castle Grant, Elgin, Scotland. He was a Colonel in the Inverness militia from 1803 to 1813, after serving in commissions in Ireland in 1798 and at Gibraltar in 1800-1. He served in parliament from 1802 to April of 1840, representing a range of constituencies. Grant continued his father’s work of local improvement and was reputedly the greatest exponent of afforestation in Scotland in the 19th century.  A copy of this engraving is part of the Yale University Library collection. Signed and dated in the plate, lower left: J. Kay, 1804 Edinburgh, Scotland, 1804. Condition: Engraving has been professionally cleaned, and the work has been mounted on an acid-free mat and reframed. Wear commensurate with age and use.
