American Modernist maple & leather armchair (1940's)
American Modernist maple arm chair. The chair seat and back have been re-upholstered in natural buff colored Italian oil tanned leather. The upholstered back panel has a slight concave construction with a faintly bowed crest rail. The upholstered back panel floats a couple inches above the upholstered seat, and the seat is attached to the upper edge of the seat frame. The flat bar arms are morticed into the center of the outer edge of the back panel and project forward to a radius which continues as the arm support attached to the seat side rails. The slightly tapered front legs have a radius cut corner and are joined to the rear legs by an "H" stretcher. Classic modernism with thoughtfully designed construction details. American, circa 1940's. Condition: The chair has been newly reupholstered with leather and the surface has been refinished. Wear commensurate with age and use.
