Meiji period Japanese Arita bowl (c. 1850-1900)
Imari palette shallow bowl decorated in Imari colors simulating the Chinese famille verte palette (green with accents of aubergine, oxide red and underglaze blue). The interior of the bowl is decorated with segmented images of mountain, a stream, and a flowering branch. The exterior of the bowl is decorated with a continuous leafy scroll, punctuated with three oxide red/orange blossoms below a diapered band in cobalt underglaze blue and accented by three oxide red enameled reserves. The base has a double circular foot with cobalt underglaze blue stringing. Japan, Meiji Period, 1850-1900. Condition: Fine original condition. The bowl has tiny firing occlusions embedded in the porcelain, which are customarily seen in pieces from wood fired kilns.
